Expressions of Originality: Visual Arts in Early Modern China

Program Overview

This course will focus on one of the most dynamic periods of China's history, the transitional 17th century, a time when the Ming Dynasty bureaucracy was disintegrating and the new Qing Dynasty regime was building, and a time that individuals exploited to gain greater freedom of expression in all things. Students will learn about the art in the major cultural centers of the time. Based in the beautiful ancient capital city of Hangzhou, we will travel to important cultural sites where ideas were formed and disseminated such as Suzhou and Nanjing, and study the paintings in the classroom and in museums.
