With one week in Rome and three weeks based in the picturesque surroundings of the Umbrian hill town of Corciano, this class will combine work from the model with plein-air landscape painting and study of works in churches and museums. In Umbria, students will live in a 19th century villa next to a medieval fortress, overlooking fields and small towns. Days will be divided between class time and free time for independent work and exploring the surrounding region. In addition to the stay in Rome, the program will include field trips to Florence, Assisi and Perugia, offering access to the greatest works of Ancient, Renaissance and Baroque art. Study of Italian art will provide a basis for the students’ own investigations in paint of their experience of Italian culture.
