Money Advice

Rupee

Rupee currency comes in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Large denominations of rupees are often counted in lacs or lakhs (100,000) crores (10,000,000) and Arabs (Abja in Marathi) (1 billion).

Suggested Personal Expense Budget: $1000

You should do some research on your own about costs, think about how you usually spend money when you are traveling, and create a realistic budget for yourself. For more on the average cost of meals, see “Meals” below.

The amount for personal expenses is intended to provide a reasonable minimum estimate for meals, travel within your host-city, laundry, minor emergencies, etc. Please note that estimate does not include optional independent travel, personal entertainment or currency fluctuations.

ATM information

ATM’s are widely available in all Indian cities and you can withdraw up to 20,000 rupees per day from many of them. ATM cards require a 4 digit pin—be sure you have one before you leave. Shops will accept only Indian currency or rupee travelers checks, but most (even fairly small shops) will now take major credit cards as well. Most large bank branches will have foreign exchange counters that will change currency and travelers checks with proper identification (passport). Rupees can be changed back into dollars within a 90-day period only with receipts that show the rupees were changed from travelers checks or cash. This can be done only upon departure from India at the airport. When exchanging money, it is important to keep the receipts. Don’t rely solely on one method of getting money; have a back up.
