Students of “Cities, Culture and Citizenship in South Asia” will earn eight upper division credits on completion of the four-week program. Anthropology 191, the first course, explores selected “Topics” in the culture, society and history of South Asian cities such as the sacred city and the fort; the colonial legacy; the modern city; the high-rise and slum; science, religion, gender, and performance in the city; globalization and citizenship. The location of the course is Bangalore, India’s high-tech city. This course is taught by Smriti Srinivas, Associate Professor, Department of Anthropology, UC Davis. This will be supplemented by guest lectures by well-known journalists, NGO activists, specialists, and professionals and field trips within Bangalore. The second course, Anthropology 198, is a directed group study entitled “Spaces of Culture” that will be conducted under the direction of Professor Srinivas and involve readings and field trips to various sites in Bangalore as well as three trips to other cities in southern India---Mysore, Hampi, and Madurai. The medium of instruction is English.
