We will have a two-night trip to the spectacular Highlands, staying in Inverness. While there, and en route to and fro, we will visit sites such as Loch Ness, Urquhart Castle, Culloden, Rannoch Moor, Glen Nevis, Plockton, Loch Lomond and other sites in which a variety of films were made and/or set.
We will travel by coach to Glasgow, visiting film locations and settings in and around this historic and vibrant city. Other possible sites: Scottish Film Archive, Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow School of Art.
We will travel by train to Stirling, visiting what many regard as Scotland’s foremost castle as well as Bannockburn battlefield, Stirling Bridge, and William Wallace Monument. Stirling is a dramatic site for significant films such as Braveheart and Tunes of Glory.
Our city tours will include settings associated with several popular films. Students may explore many other sites as well, including the Royal Botanic Garden, Arthur’s Seat, Writer's Museum, the John Knox House, the new Scottish Parliament, the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Yacht Britannia, Roman Crammond, Hopetoun House, Greyfriars Kirk, and St. Giles Cathedral. They may also take private coach tours to the Borders and other areas.
Edinburgh features several renowned festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival, the Fringe Festival, and the Edinburgh Book Festival, all of which will be well under way during the latter part of our stay. We will attend at least a few events, including plays and a concert featuring Scottish music. Students should have time to attend events on their own as well. Many students make a point of attending the immensely popular Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a unique and unforgettable display of bagpipe and marching units, among other things.
