You have the option of enrolling in Undergraduate Level units or Graduate Level Units. This program carries a total of 8 units. Enrolled students must take both courses listed. Auditing is not an option.
Summer Abroad will provide an extensive list of reading materials on a CD. You will not need to read everything on the list. However, you'll need to pick and choose the materials according to the focus of your project. Additional reading materials will be handed out at the May 17th Spring Orientation. If you are unable to attend the orientation (non-UC Davis students), your materials will be mailed to your mailing address.
During the Spring Quarter, Prof. Hirtz will ask participants for topic proposals. Depending on the class interest, groups will be assigned based on the topics submitted. Some topics from the past included the health care system, electoral system, policing issues, and immigrant workers. It is imperative that groups begin their research before arriving in Germany. This type of early preparation will allow for flexibility and plenty of time to complete tasks. Past students also advised that groups have a list of possible interviews (persons, government officials, NGOs, etc). Much of the participant's time in Germany will be spent in pursuit of these interviews in order to complete your final project.
Participants will keep a research journal cataloging their learning progress. Participants will write comments, reflections, and questions on the course and research project.
