Money Advice

Peso Bank notes are for 500; 1,000; 2,000; 5,000; 10,000 and 20,000. It is often difficult to change the latter two, especially in small villages.

The government does not regulate the market of foreign currency in Chile making it possible to exchange money at any established "Casa de Cambio" at market driven exchange rates. They are common in the downtown area and Providencia district as well as shopping centers in Santiago. NOTE: Visitors should avoid black market exchange rates.

All major credit cards are accepted. Travelers’ checks are least widely accepted and fetch the lowest exchange rates.

The simplest and most efficient way to carry and change money is with a debit or ATM card. These ATM machines normally give better rates than banks or money changers, and charge no commission. Only ATMs in larger cities will be compatible with international debit systems like Plus or Cirrus. Credit cards are fairly widely accepted.

Suggested Personal Expense Budget: $1000

Summer Abroad recommends budgeting about $1,000 USD for personal expenses. Of course, some people spend more and some people spend less. Prices in Chile are comparable to prices in the U.S. You should do some research on your own about costs, think about how you usually spend money when you are traveling, and create a realistic budget for yourself.

The amount for personal expenses is intended to provide a reasonable minimum estimate for meals, travel within your host-city, laundry, minor emergencies, etc. Please note that estimate does not include optional independent travel, personal entertainment or currency fluctuations.

If you would like up-to-date exchange rate information, check the Oanda site at www.oanda.com.

ATM information

All major cities and many smaller towns with a significant tourist economy have one or more ATMs. Some banks, however, charge rather exorbitant fees for international withdrawals, and per-day withdrawal limits are usually around US$300. ATM cards require a 4 digit pin—be sure you have one before you leave. Don’t rely solely on one method of getting money; have a back up.
