The program will analyze the history of Spanish art. The first part will focus on Spanish architecture and will cover the following styles: Roman, Pre-Romanesque, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. Some of the classes will be taught in the actual monuments. The second part will focus on Spanish painting, including the following painters: Velázquez, El Greco, Goya, Picasso, Dalí, and Miró. We will visit museums where many of their works are housed: Museo del Prado, Museo Reina Sofía, and Museo Thyssen Borsemiza. During the program we will have three field trips: Salamanca and  Madrid (2 days each) and Bilbao to see the Guggenheim Museum, one of the emblematic monuments of contemporary art. We will also go to a flamenco show in Madrid.

Dr. Cristina Martínez-Carazo, a native from Spain, received her B.A. and M.A. in History of Art at the Universidad de Salamanca, Spain and her Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis, where she has been teaching since 1995. Her research and publications focuses on Spanish Film and the 19th Century Spanish novel. Her extensive experience with international programs and her solid international background led her to actively participate in several education abroad programs.

This Program carries a total of 8 units. Enrolled students must take both courses listed. Auditing is not an option.

Accommodations

You will stay at the Residencia Universitaria San Agustín in downtown Burgos and is within walking distance to all main monuments and attractions. The Residencia is a remodeled 200 year-old building, which is a dorm-like facility with clean and comfortable rooms. Each room has a bed (two beds for double occupancy rooms), a desk, and a bathroom. You will have access to the Residencia's library, small gymnasium, and tennis and basketball courts. Alcohol is not permitted on the premises and this rule is strictly enforced. Included in the accommodations price your rooms will be cleaned Mondays through Fridays and fresh bed linens provided once a week. You will need to bring your own towels. They will also do your personal laundry once a week. To receive laundry service you will need to mark your clothes and have a bag with your name on it.

Meals

Meals are provided three times a day including weekends. The cafeteria has limited options for vegetarians. Please note that if you are a strict vegetarian or vegan, the Residencia cafeteria may not be able to accommodate you and you should budget to spend extra money to supplement your meals.

Fees

Fees for Summer Abroad include the Summer Abroad Program Fee, Course Fee, and Accommodation and Activities Fee. The Accommodation and Activities Fee covers lodging, selected meals (if included), selected field trips, group accidental death & dismemberment and emergency health insurance, select publications, and additional program specific costs. Air fare is not included. All fees are subject to change.
