Class Size: 26-30
This program brings students into a real-world setting where they explore urban and rural policy dynamics that frame the psychological make-up of Argentina. Students spend two weeks in the indigenous North where they explore rugged Andes communities and camp in small pueblos. The isolation and beauty of the Andes are countered by the urban chic of Buenos Aires, the “Paris” of South America. Class lectures introduce students to the impact of Peronismo, military dictatorships, and economic crisis and their influence on Argentineans’ daily lives.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Professor Yvette Flores is a clinical psychologist who teaches health and mental health courses in Chicana/o Studies. An avid traveler, Professor Flores is the mother of two young adults and the grandmother of Lei-Lahni Xitlali Henninger Ortiz, age 14 months.
Chicana/o Studies 122 and 131 will allow students to examine the intersection of US and Argentine Latina/o contemporary and historical public policy and the impact of globalization and transnational migrations on family structure and functioning. Both classes integrate field work, and guest lecturers. A major goal of both courses is to encourage students to develop a domestic Latino perspective with a broader hemispheric Latino approach when analyzing public policy, family structure and functioning issues.
Students will be staying in shared rooms in a hostel near the center of town. More information will be available in the Program Specific Guide.
