Faculty Opportunities

UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offer faculty the opportunity to teach UC Davis courses in an international setting. Instructors design the programs so that the natural and cultural resources available on site complement course content. UC Davis faculty members provide onsite instruction and accompany students on group field trips. They also coordinate accommodations and activities, oversee the health and safety of program participants, and participate in publicizing the program.

Faculty wishing to propose a new program should get a sense of our current offerings by visiting the Summer Abroad Programs Page.

Summer Abroad Program Model

Programs should be designed for University of California students who wish to study abroad during the summer. Programs are typically four weeks, include two four unit courses and are taught in English. The program should include an upper-division core course as the key element and field trips or field study for which the students generally receive 4 units of 198 credit. Courses must be regular offerings that are listed in the UC Davis General Catalog. Programs should emphasize culture or science, not language, and integrate the intellectual and cultural opportunities available on site with the course content.

Eligibility

Program instructors must have a faculty appointment at UC Davis for the 2009-2010 academic year or have emeritus status. Fluency in the language of the proposed country and familiarity of the site are required. Faculty with ties or long-term experience in the host location preferred.

Submitting Proposals

Faculty members should submit a proposal form which includes a description outlining the rationale for offering the program abroad and a description of the proposed location, including details regarding classroom, lodging and dining facilities for students. A sample syllabus should be included along with a list of possible field trips and a brief description of the target student audience. The most successful proposals include specific details about program facilities, transportation and costs, on site activities, and housing.

Proposals are generally reviewed through May 30th for the following summer. Interested instructors are encouraged to meet with the Summer Abroad Faculty Director, Eric Schroeder, to discuss program ideas at any time during the year.

Compensation

Summer Abroad faculty receive round-trip airfare to the program site, lodging, and a per diem (for meals and incidentals). The salary includes compensation for instruction and a supplement for program coordination, which includes identifying appropriate housing, arranging on-site logistics (including group field trips and group transportation), promoting the program, and participating in Summer Abroad training.
